Understanding Japanese Lifestyles and Concepts – The Little Book of Japanese Living by Yutaka Yazawa.

Japan, a country with impressive nature, modern cities, culture and polite folks. The city’s cleanliness, fresh seafood and mindfulness never fails to impress me. I have always enjoyed being calm in Japan given how respectful people are in public spaces. Hence, I wondered how I could have a little bit of Japanese lifestyle outside of Japan?

Short and Sweet.

I was able to find bits and pieces of info in The Little Book of Japanese Living written by Yutaka Yazawa, a Japanese born in the 1970s outskirt of Tokyo. The chapters of this book covers clear introductions of Japan as well as Japanese living concepts such as: (1)Areas of Japan; (2)What Makes the Japanese; (3)Culture, Art and Style; (4)At the Table; (5)Life Outside; (6)Life Inside; (7)Family Life and Life’s Milestones; (8)Holidays and Celebrations.

In all honesty, geographically I have always only known Japan based on famous cities and prefectures. After going through the first chapter of “Areas of Japan” only was I made aware of the different regions of Japan. For example the Koshin’etsu region, Hokkaido region and many other parts which I have no clue before.

Ikigai – A Reason For Being.

My favorite part of this book is “What Makes the Japanese” chapter which the author writes about Japanese spirituality, people, Samurai, Wabi-sabi and Ikigai.

Ikigai is a famous concept which brings forth a reason for being, the value of one’s life. If you have not heard of Ikigai before, the author clearly defines and translates Ikigai for readers to grasp the idea. I loved how easy it was for anyone to digest this wonderful concept.

A Glimpse of The Japanese Way.

It is no secret that in order to experience a new culture is to speak the language and to live in the country. If you would like to learn or understand the Japanese way of life, this little book may provide you a short yet clear glimpse to start with.
