Have you ever stared into a pair of cat’s eye, wondering what goes on in their mind? It is oh so big, round and captivating. Somehow stress just fades away immediately the moment they start purring. In today’s post, I would like to introduce you to a heart warming book titled Purr Therapy by Dr.Kathy McCoy (2014).
Dr.Kathy McCoy is a psychotherapist and author of many books. When I first saw this book in the library, I was not drawn by the psychotherapy aisle but rather the front cover of the book which had a big picture of a cat. Little did I know, the book would make me cry in two of its chapter.
If you have deep connections with animals or pets, this is the book you should pick up and sit down with a cup of hot coffee over the weekend. There are 14 chapters which included many interesting characters such as: (1)Kathy and Bob; (2)Freddie, Gus, Timmy, Marina and Maggie; (3)vets; (4)and therapy clients.
Animal Therapy.
The main focus of this book was to highlight the power of animal therapy as well as the author’s journey in discovering her cat’s ability to co-work with some of her therapy clients.
Life, Love and Loss.
There is a saying that a cat chooses its owner rather than the owner chooses the cat. If you have experienced this saying before, you will smile while you read this book. Dr.Kathy was able to clearly described the process of her cat adoption journey along with the challenges that came along with it. I was very much saddened by one of the chapters which made me so very cautious of pet food brand choices.
Enduring Lessons – From Timmy, Marina and Life’s Grieving Process.
Besides heartwarming stories of life, love and loss, the author has also curated enduring lessons from her professional therapist point of view in the book. Not only are these lessons helpful for struggling adults, it can also be read by young adults as future life guidances. To quote some of the lessons from her book, these are my top 5 favourites:
“Make self-care a priority.”
“When in doubt, reach out. Take risk of reaching out to those who aren’t friendly as well as those who obviously like you.”
“Let silence build an alliance.”
“Allow joy between your moments of pain.”
“Embrace change.”
Chill and Spend Time with Loved Ones.
Life is short with pain and blessings at the same time. If you have recently dealt with loss of a pet or curious about purr powers, spare some time on Purr Therapy. Before I end this post, I would also like to thank Timmy and Marina for melting my heart.
